We talked about it on this week’s podcast and in an upcoming BulletPoints. Amiibo are annoying to a
degree, but the custom amiibo scene is actually quite incredible. So I figure,
let’s take a moment to recognize the brilliant craftsmanship and dedication it
takes to make these cheap looking Amiibo’s look like works of genuine talent. I’ll
do my best to include names. If you are the creator of an Amiibo we showcase
and you’re name was omitted, please let us know in an email (evacstation@gmail.com) and we’ll make
the edit as needed. Let’s get started.
#12 – Dankey Kang (by superlegend) – For those who don’t
quite get the joke or remember why this is supposed to be funny, I’ll remind
you. Not long ago, on the well-known American game-show Jeopardy, a question for the Final Jeopardy round was asked in
which the contestants were to guess Sonic the Hedgehog. Clearly, none of the
contestants knew of Sonic, Sega, or are that familiar with video games. One
such guess was of Dankey Kang (a non-existent character entirely). But
Superlegend took to the task of recoloring Donkey Kong blue, giving him rings,
and pretty much making us the Dankey Kang we never really knew we wanted or
needed.
#11 – Metal Mario (Lennytheviewer) – Metal Mario is exactly
what it sounds like. It’s Mario, but made of metal. First appearing on the N64
in Super Mario 64 as just an
alternate form, Metal Mario was also one of the first recurring “bosses” of Super Smash Bros, usually fought prior
to Master Hand. Lennytheviewer made an excellent recreation of our metallic
friend with a very nice coat of metallic paint. I really don’t have much more
to say beyond that as this is mostly just a recolor without much else to it
than that. But the quality of it is still enough to keep me satisfied.
#10 – Fierce Deity Link (Wendy Rochelle) and Light/Dark
Samus (SunnieF) – More recolors, but legitimate recolors that require more than
a single color of paint to make it happen. These redesigns are fairly intricate
and do a fantastic job bringing these alternate skins to life. For those
needing a refresher, the variations of Samus come from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes while the variation of Link comes from the
soon to be re-released Majora’s Mask.
One again, I have not much else to say other than good job ladies as these are
some top quality custom jobs.
#09 – Bloody Axe Villager (ChibiSilverWings) – Remember that
name, because Mr. Wings will be back more for some other amazing designs he (or
she) did. So when Smash 4 first
debuted it’s trailer, the creepy look of the Villager became a meme where fans
turned him from lovable avatar to mass-murdering psycho. So making an
evil-looking Villager with a bloody axe is just a devilishly cute way to remind
us why the Villager is such a menace and why we should fear his very inclusion
in the game.
#08 – Hoodie Little Mac (amitybeach) – There are a few
interesting redesigns for Little Mac’s amiibo. But I really do enjoy the one
where he is sporting his workout hoodie. Partly because this is the skin I like
to play most. But also because you know this design required a lot of external
resources to make happen and it wasn’t just a simple paint-job. Overall, the
quality of this amiibo is solid looking and I wish this was an actual variant
of the amiibo available for purchase instead of being a rare custom-build
costing lots of cash. Good job, amity.
#07 – Wooly World Yoshi (NlightNd1) – This is another one of
those custom jobs that looks like more than just a simple bit of paint went to
change this. The outside texture of this Yoshi actually looks like it’s made of
yarn and while I cannot vouch for this myself, I would love to know if the
outside layer really is wool or made to feel like wool. Goes so far to be like the
game, Wooly World, where everything
looks like it’s made of yarn, and that’s a pretty awesome look for this little
guy.
#06 – Funky Kong (chibisilverwings) – Another entry from
chibi, Funky Kong is another dressing-up of good old Donkey Kong (leader of the
DK crew). But unlike before where it was mostly a recoloring, we have a whole
new outfight for DK including a bandana, sunglasses, jean shorts, and a
tank-top. For those unfamiliar with the DK: Country games, Funky is the
character who’d let you travel anywhere on the map you’ve already visited. This
cool guy gets his own amiibo, just a shame he isn’t in Smash.
#05 – Copy-Ability-Kirby (eniam rej) – Eniam has made not
one, not two, but several different iterations of our pink, round friend from
the stars. Not only that, but each one of the unique like Mega Man Kirby,
Samus, Fox, and I think Yoshi as well. There are other copy ability Kirby
amiibos out there from other artists such as meenarcas and their Solid Snake
amiibo, which is very detailed as well. All of these different amiibo are
pretty damn spectacular and it’s another thing you’d think Nintendo would have
considered in making these figures.
#03 – Waluigi (dpstockboy) – And complete with his own box,
the Waluigi amiibo sold for $200 on ebay not too long ago. That’s some Waluigi
love right there (and, not it wasn’t me). While there’s no game for this amiibo
to functionally do anything to or for Waluigi (or even add Waluigi to a game
where he deserves to be) we can all take a moment and have a chuckle in that
Waluigi was, in fact, given an amiibo. More interesting is the fact this was
created before Ganondorf got his amiibo. Waluigi #1? Possibly if he was able to
beat Ganondorf to the amiibo line (officially or not).
#02 – Mewtwo (tomcat1994) – A little premature, a custom
Mewtwo was a fun sight to see, again, box included. Tomcat decided to say “fuck
it” to waiting until spring of 2015 for the character (and possibly the amiibo)
to release. Let’s just make our own damn amiibo and tell Nintendo to suck a
Yoshi egg. And that he basically did. He set out to create the world’s most
powerful Pokémon and definitely succeeded. And while this figure was quite the
achievement, there is one figure that gets ahead for both creativity and
detail that must be acknowledged.
#1 – Harley Quinn (rawmeatcowboy) – Putting Harley Quinn
from the much beloved Batman series
is something I can always get behind, whether it be in Saints Row as a character I built, in Suicide Squad ideally played by Tara Strong, but I’ll take whoever
WB decided on. Or even in my bed late one night (boy, that got creepy). Harley
Quinn is a fun and uniquely disturbing character. So this cowboy here decided
to paint and mold her likeness… over Princess Zelda’s Amiibo. I’m not sure
whether to laugh, cry, or applaud. But hats off to you sir (or madam).
